MiraCosta College Community Math and Science Fair

On Saturday, April 10th, the MiraCosta College Service Learning Department will host a Community Math and Science Fair. This event brings over 200 college students and their professors together to plan and facilitate hands-on math and science activities for children in grades k-8. Disciplines involved in the event include: biology, chemistry, astronomy, physics, horticulture, health sciences, engineering, marine biology, geology, anthropology, biotechnology and more. The goal for the event is to introduce children (particularly high risk populations) to a college campus, provide educational outreach, and stimulate interest in math and science. In addition to the hundreds of hands-on activities offered, the campus labs are open for exploration, demonstrations and experiments. In 2009, the event brought over 500 families to campus and attendance is expected to increase in 2010. Unfortunately funding for this event has been cancelled due to educational budget cuts.
